Add sftp access for ordinary users on QNAP |

The primary purpose of this article is to add sftp-only access for ordinary users in a chroot environment (i.e. they cannot access files outside the confined space we allocate for them). It should be possible to use public key authentication (controlled by admin, though) and the article also includes how to configure shell access, but you should only enable shell access to highly trusted user (more or less only users you would entrust with the admin password). A QPKG that automates the configuration is available for download at the end of the article.

After adding the improved hotplug function to my TS-239 Pro I didn't need the USB One Touch Copy button to initiate a backup, so I decided to make better use of it and make it run a user-defined script.

The hotplug function on the TS-239 Pro doesn't include handling of usermap files, but with a few changes we can add this back and allow user defined actions when e.g. a digital camera is attached to a USB port.

Automated backups using rsnapshot |

Backups. Necessary, but easy to forget unless they are performed automatically. To handle this task in my local network I installed SlugOS on an NSLU2, which is a relatively inexpensive, low-power, and quiet device, so keeping it on 24/7 works just fine for me. It runs rsnapshot activated by cron to perform the backups and provides a simple configure-and-forget backup system.

Running rsnapshot on NSLU2 has provided a solid backup service, but it was slow and the NSLU2 was required for a different project, so I decided to replace it with a QNAP TS-239 Pro.
